Student/Faculty Liaison

Hello SIRLS Students!

I am your Student/Faculty Liaison which means I am here to act as the student voice with SIRLS faculty. Please contact me with any of your questions, concerns, and ideas so that I can raise them during the faculty meetings. Your issues are taken seriously by Jana Bradley and SIRLS. You can email me directly or submit via an anonymous form.

I just attended the first Faculty meeting for this semester and will be sending out notes about issues directly affecting SIRLS students soon.

Party this Saturday!

Jana Bradley, SIRLS Director, is hosting a Back-to-School Party for all SIRLS students, staff, and faculty, to be held this coming Saturday 8/26.

E-mails have been sent out to the IRLSADMIN listserv with details. This will be a great chance to meet other students and some of the faculty.

Teen Zone Volunteers Needed

From a fellow SIRLS student in need of assistance. Please contact Cheryl to volunteer or for more information:

“I am a SIRLS student, LSO member and the Youth Services Librarian at the Oro Valley Library.

We offer Homework Help in the Teen Zone Monday through Thursday, 3:30pm to 5pm. Currently, we have lost all of our volunteers for Mondays and Wednesdays. The expertise that is needed is a) love to work with elementary or middle school students; b) have knowledge in subjects such as Language Arts, Math, Reading and/or Social Studies; and c) availability to commit to most Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5pm during the Amphitheater School District year.

We begin the new year on Monday, August 21st.

New Meeting Location for Fall

Upon discussion at the meeting last Friday, we’ve decided to hold our LSO Meetings somewhere new this fall – Bookend Cafe! (see here: http://www.union.arizona.edu/dining/ufs/bookend/index.php).

This decision was made based on the following:
- The Udall Center is no longer consistenly available
- SIRLS generally closes its doors at 5:00
- We want to allow students to attend virtually; while we have officers willing to bring laptops, we can also checkout laptops from the Main Library if needed
- The cafe serves food and coffee!
- We can go in the library if needed (it’s cold/hot outside, we want to use a whiteboard or print something, etc.)

So for the next meeting, held September 1st, we will meet at 6:00PM at Bookend Cafe. See you there!

WHO: As always, all SIRLS students all invited! New students are strongly encouraged to come and get involved.
WHERE: Udall Center Conference Room, on the Northeast corner of 1st St. and Euclid (see map here: http://iiewww.ccit.arizona.edu/uamap/staticLarge/483.02.html).

Following the meeting we’ll head to happy hour at Gentle Ben’s on University Blvd (see here: http://gentlebens.sundropstudios.com/). (Frog and Firkin is holding a special “dart tournament” event this night, which is why we are going to GB’s instead.)

You are welcome to come to just the meeting or just the happy hour, but you’re encouraged to come to both!!
